How to recognize good Low flyer / Patti waley pigeons
Before describing the good signs it is equally important to understand this pigeon. In my article "types of domestic pigeons" I wrote about 4 basic breeds of pigeons that we can see around us. As per my study of our sub-continent pigeon breeds I found out that Low flyers/Patti waley pigeons is the result of selective cross breed of high flyers and flock flyer pigeons. The prove of this statement is that, if you have kept low flyer pigeons you must have seen that a white pigeon can produce red/brown color or even black.
Moreover, they never produces a single eye combination. I have seen a single white pigeon with 2 different eye colors. e.g: Bull eye(black /Makoye) and another eye which is yellow or white.
Now how it happens? This is because of cross breeding of two dominant genes. Let me describe it in easiest way.
In pigeon gene below are the color classification:
Black color: Dominant gene
Red/ brown / grey: Dominant gene
White color: Recessive gene
In eyes: Bull & yellow is dominant eyes. Whereas, white is recessive.
In the result, If you cross Black color with red / brown / grey. It will produce weather black or other color that you crossed. There is very less chance that you get a young bird in half black and half brown.
In contrast, if you cross any of them (Black or brown) with white color, it will split the color black or brown and they will produce black spotted or brown spotted young birds which we call locally "Cheeney". Similarly, when you cross Bull/Makoya eyes with yellow. It will produce whether both yellow or both bull. Or it might dont cross with each other and produce one bull and one yellow.
So this is the prove that Patti waley are the result of selective cross breeding and it is not a breed that produces the same young birds. For example if you breed a high flying breed, like teddy they will always produce teddy because of strong gene of their breed. This is not the case in low flyers.
This is the only reason that it is really difficult to have same result in a pair of low flyer. Here I am talking about the flying style/ intelligence etc. Therefore, it is important to understand individual pigeon rather keeping a stock and produce nothing.
Below are the basic signs of good low flyer / Patti waley pigeons:
Body structure:
On the basis of above statement, It is clear that low flyers has variety of structures. Like you must have seen a broad structure pigeons flying till evening and you must have also seen a thin and lengthy structure flying with the same result. So it is really difficult to make a concrete statement about this breed. This is just because of the extensive breeding as I mentioned above. So what is the good structure of this breed?
In my experience, it is important to know your environment / weather. To understand better, clear yourself that low flyers fly at low altitude and at that position they need to fight heavy wind and hot temperature. To fight with heavy wind bird need to have thing and long structure. It helps them to fly straight against heavy wind. To fight with temperature, it should have very strong structure. Strong structure means, they should not have any gap between keel bones their chest should not contain fats. Chest bone should be straight and hard(if you see from front it should look like V. Neck should be thing and long and shoulders should have strong shoulder muscles and if you see them from front gap between chest and shoulders must be very clear.
Wing structure and feather shape:
As stated above the least the weight of the muscles the stronger flyer it would be. So it should not have long wing span. As long and broad wing span is best for lifting in the air. Which is good for high flyers. Low flyers do not fly in deep sky. Therefore they should have thin and medium wing span but again it should be proportionally equal to the body. The most important sign is the shape of primaries. In my opinion whole wing should have three shapes of primaries. 1 shape that would be makes with set of 1 - 4 primary. These are most small and curved towards outside of the wing. Than 5- 7are bigger than first set and bend toward inside and same goes with 8-10. Here 10 primary should be smaller than 9th and shape should be bend toward inside. None of the primary should have gap with each other. The least gape in the wing the least effort pigeon needs to float in the wind
Eye signs:
As I described above in details and I have also had long discussion on this topic. People who try to find out flying abilities or breeding abilities in pigeons eye's are just making fool themselves and other around them. I always ask them if pigeon fly with their eyes than which eye make pigeon fly if a pigeon has one black and other yellow eye?? I think no one will able to answer this. Therefore, I say that pigeon eyes is a source that tells you the origin of that pigeon.
If you ask me about experience than I would say that low flyers with reddish spots in yellow eyes has good abilities of breeding.
Feet / Claws:
Again color of claws may varies due to the back breeding colors but for standard. The pigeons that has very thin and long fingers in their claws are the best in low flyers. They have long legs and makes pigeon tall, Their thigh structure looks like a falcon. In my opinion pigeons who has darker scales on their claws has both breeding and flying abilities.
Intelligence:
Always choose best structure means a strong birds. Intelligence cannot find by looking at structure, eyes or any other physical appearance. It is matter of brain and how pigeon think. This is nearly not possible to see by touching it. People who make this standard, I don't consider them a sensible fancier. In my opinion, intelligence can only seen by keeping pigeon and observing their behavior. I will define intelligence in my next article so stay tune.
So above are some basic identities of good low flyer pigeon. By using above instructions you can find great low flyer pigeon that can make your pigeons best for rest of your life.
