Food mix and plan for "summer competition" of Pakistani High flying pigeons

Special summer diet plan for flying pigeons

Today I am going to start a very interesting discussion. As we all know that high flying pigeon fanciers are getting ready for summer competitions.

Here I want to tell my readers that In Pakistan and also in India Competition starts in peak months

like May and June. Here in Pakistan, fanciers start preparing their birds from end February. Initially it is very important for fanciers to select better birds for competition.
There are many criteria to select bird for summer competitions.
I have already defined tools of selection best bird for competition in my initial articles.

Now comes to very important aspect that is food mix and food plan for summer competition. before setting up right mix it is very important to understand the requirement of a pigeon. There are three main processes in preparing the pigeon for summer competition.

     1.     Plucking all primary feathers
2.     Completion of all primary feathers
3.     preparation flights

In all three processes, There are three different food requirements. So I will describe food plan in same manner.

Plucking the secondary feathers

There are many fanciers that not only pluck primary feathers but they also pluck tail and secondary feathers. Which is extra burden on pigeon. As pigeon need primary feathers for flight and secondaries are just helping hand. Which do not get damaged during flights So plucking them is not required if they are ok. If you see damaged feathers in tail than you can only pluck them.

As far as food plan is concern, there are grains like mustard seeds, chick peas that are full of proteins and oil. In the period of molting, your fix mix should consist on 40% protein/oil and 60 % starch, sugar and glucose. In this period I use pearl millet, wheat, chick peas and mustard seeds with the ratio of 4:2:1/2:1/2.

Completion of all primary feathers

This is a period when your pigeon start flying after almost 40 days of molting period. after 40 days of rest and excessive protein tends to gain pigeon's weight. Now it is time to reduce their weight. For doing that you need to reduce the weight of protein from food that is chick peas and mustard oil. When pigeon start flying eliminate mustard oil from their food. and keep the rest of the thing with same ratio. Change the feeding time. Now feed them after they land from their flight. Start their flying at mid day like 11 to 12 and when they come back home feed them.

Preparation Flights

This is very crucial time for all the players. In this period when your bird loose all its weight during long flying hours. Pigeon need to gain back all the nutrients to be ready for next day flight. In this period do not change the food ratio. Just add on some electrolytes, glucose and protein in their food. To do this, add glucose in the water, and also use electrolytes like ORS in the water. ORS is ok if you use once in a week. Glucose can be given after landing back to home. For more energy use bread/chappati pieces in Desi ghee (Home made oil). You can also use almonds and Gurh(brown sugar). It help amazingly in recovering from tiredness.

In the time of molting always feed pigeons at 1:00 pm. During flying preparation time always feed them after an hour of landing. Always give them half an hour for feeding and than give them water after 15 minutes when you see every pigeon has fed and drunk water. Take out feeding pot and water bottle and clean the floor. Make sure no piece of food should be there after feeding time.

Follow these instruction and your birds would be healthier and you will see miraculous changes. I am waiting to hear from you guys too how you prepare your pigeons for summer competitions. Must write your best formulas in comments.
